چکیده

We verify the effective refraction index approach (ERIA) developed for surface plasmon propagation in ultrathin tapered metal–dielectric–metal slot waveguides by means of comparison of exact solutions obtained within ERIA for two different profiles and different scales of tapering with finite-difference time-domain numerical simulations. We show that for smooth enough tapering, ERIA gives the plasmon field structure closely matched with numerical results. We also outline the range of the taper scales in which ERIA leads to the results different from simulations. © 2013 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (240.6680) Surface plasmons; (050.6624) Subwavelength structures; (230.7400) Waveguides, slab; (290.5825) Scattering theory. http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/JOSAB.30.001601

Nonlinear nanofocusing in tapered plasmonic waveguides.

We suggest using tapered waveguides for compensating losses of surface plasmon-polaritons in order to enhance nonlinear effects at the nanoscale. We study nonlinear plasmon self-focusing in tapered metal-dielectric-metal slot waveguides and demonstrate that, by an appropriate choice of the taper angle, we can effectively suppress the mode attenuation achieving stable propagation of a spatial pl...

Plasmon mode transformation in modulated-index metal-dielectric slot waveguides.

The concept of adiabatic mode transformation between silicon waveguide and surface plasmon-polariton modes in subwavelength metal-dielectric slots is investigated. The mode transformer consists of a modulated-index slot region, which is bound by two metal slabs. Using the design scheme, we will show that the optical dispersion of a modulated-index metal slot waveguide can be engineered well abo...

Optimal tapers for compensating losses in plasmonic waveguides

1 Introduction The study of the field enhancement and subwavelength focusing of light in optical waveguides is of great interest for many applications including sensing, lasing, and imaging. The light confinement in conventional optical waveguides is limited by diffraction and by that dielectric waveguides do not allow the effective field fo-cusing to dimensions less than a micron. In contrast,...

Long-range plasmonic waveguides with hyperbolic cladding.

We study plasmonic waveguides with dielectric cores and hyperbolic multilayer claddings. The proposed design provides better performance in terms of propagation length and mode confinement in comparison to conventional designs, such as metal-insulator-metal and insulator-metal-insulator plasmonic waveguides. We show that the proposed structures support long-range surface plasmon modes, which ex...

Self-focusing of femtosecond surface plasmon polaritons.

We study the propagation of femtosecond pulses in nonlinear metal-dielectric plasmonic waveguiding structures by employing the finite-difference time-domain numerical method. Self-focusing of plasmon pulses is observed for defocusing Kerr-like nonlinearity of the dielectric medium due to normal dispersion. We compare the nonlinear propagation of plasmon pulses along a single metal-dielectric in...
